Math Instructional Routines
Instructional routines in a mathematics classroom are structured, repeatable activities that create a predictable environment for learning and focus students on mathematical thinking rather than procedural steps. They support reasoning, problem-solving, and discourse by encouraging students to explain their ideas, listen to others, and build connections. Effective routines, promote active participation and reduce cognitive load through consistency and clear expectations. Teachers should introduce routines gradually, model them, and facilitate discussions so students do the intellectual work.
