Welcome to the Indiana District-Level McKinney-Vento Basic Level Certification course collection for local McKinney-Vento liaisons. This collection is required training for any person assigned the role of McKinney-Vento (Homeless) liaison within a school district. 

In accordance with The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and IC 20-50-1-6, district level McKinney-Vento liaisons must receive annual training and, in turn, must provide annual training for all staff.  Liaison basic training is created to ensure:

Understanding of the definition of homelessness as it applies to students outlined in the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act - this understanding includes awareness of the roles and responsibilities that local liaisons assume in order to: 1) identify homeless youth and support their needs, and 2) develop/implement strategies that help identify and eliminate barriers in education that exist for homeless youth. This course provides a high-level review of general information needed to be successful in your role. You will not learn every detail needed to be successful, but you will begin to develop a broader understanding of how district level liaisons advocate for the rights of homeless youth in the school community.

Training for staff should develop an understanding of the needs and rights of homeless youth as outlined in the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act to ensure: 1) specific needs of homeless youth are addressed across all systems in the school community, and 2) an increased awareness of how homelessness impacts students’ long term is achieved by all who support homeless youth in our schools.
